Choosing the right industrial wire supplier can have a direct impact on product quality, operational efficiency, and long-term production costs. Whether you're sourcing spring wire, stainless steel wire, welding wire, alloy wire, or custom engineering wire solutions, consistency and technical expertise matter.

As an industrial wire supplier in South Africa for over 30 years, NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS has helped manufacturers, mining operations, engineering firms, and industrial buyers source reliable materials that meet demanding performance standards. This guide explores what three decades in the industry have taught us about quality, supply reliability, technical support, and selecting the right industrial wire solutions for modern applications.

Industrial wire plays a critical role across multiple sectors, yet it is often one of the least visible components in an operation. From manufacturing equipment and mining machinery to electrical systems and agricultural infrastructure, the performance of wire products directly affects productivity, reliability, and operational efficiency.

The wrong material choice can result in:

This is why selecting an experienced industrial wire supplier is about more than purchasing material. It is about partnering with a company that understands applications, specifications, and long-term performance requirements.

At NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS, we've spent three decades helping customers navigate these decisions by supplying quality materials backed by technical expertise and dependable service.

South Africa's industrial landscape has changed significantly since 1995.

Manufacturers, mining companies, engineering firms, and agricultural businesses operate in increasingly competitive environments where quality, efficiency, and compliance are more important than ever.

As a result, buyers now demand far more from suppliers than simple product availability.

Today's procurement and engineering teams typically require:

Requirement Why It Matters
Material Traceability Ensures accountability and quality control
ISO-Certified Supply Supports compliance and operational standards
Technical Guidance Helps identify the correct material for the application
Reliable Lead Times Reduces operational disruption
Custom Packaging Improves manufacturing efficiency
Consistent Product Quality Minimises risk and downtime

Over the years, industrial wire supply has evolved from a transactional purchase into a strategic partnership between suppliers and customers.

Businesses now rely on suppliers who can provide insight, support material selection, and help improve overall operational performance.

Every Application Requires a Different Material Solution

One of the biggest misconceptions in industry is that all wire products perform the same function.

In reality, material selection can significantly influence operational performance.

For example:

Understanding these differences allows engineers and procurement teams to select materials that improve efficiency, durability, and overall performance.

The performance of any wire product starts with the quality of the raw material and manufacturing process.

At NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS, we work with established international manufacturing partners that consistently meet recognised quality standards. Many products can be supplied with:

This gives customers confidence that the products they receive will perform as specified.

Over the past three decades, we have learned that many industrial challenges are solved before the material is even ordered.

Selecting the correct wire grade, finish, coating, packaging format, or alloy composition can have a significant impact on:

This is why technical support remains one of the most valuable services a specialist supplier can provide.

By understanding application requirements from the outset, businesses can avoid costly mistakes and improve long-term results.

Industrial wire supports some of the country's most important sectors.

As a specialist industrial wire supplier in South Africa, NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS supplies a diverse range of products designed to meet varying industry requirements.

By offering both standard and specialised solutions, we help customers source materials that align with their exact technical requirements.

These principles have helped establish NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS as a trusted supplier to manufacturers, engineers, mining operations, and industrial buyers across South Africa.

If you have a shop or an on-line presence, customers or potential customers visit you, and they would not expect otherwise.

However, if you supply a tailored product or service, visiting the customer optimises the chance of a successful on-going relationship.

NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS primarily supplies customers who are manufacturers, with wire or wire products that they use to produce other diverse items, for example springs, cables, heating elements or equipment components.

The wire we supply has a unique specification for each application which governs the material, size, tolerances and mechanical or electrical characteristics.

Whilst the specification should be able to be supplied by the customer, this is often not available beyond a basic description. The customer just wants a wire that “works” the same or better than they are currently using, and preferably at a lower cost.

In this case, a visit to the customer is essential – either to the Buyer if they are knowledgeable about the wire’s use, or the Production or Quality Managers depending on the mature of the operation.

In the latter cases, particularly in the factory environment, one is able to ascertain exactly how the wire is used and what are its most important characteristics for the user.

Often the factory personnel are unaware of supply options, as their currently supplied material has remained as originally supplied, whereas their process may have been changed or their machinery upgraded over the years.

Contact us to discuss your specific requirements

NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS purchases from many countries around the world and our main suppliers are wire mills or downstream wire processors.

These companies have catalogues showing a wide range of wires produced and their sales departments can quote for any of these, but specific requirements are often only determined by face-to-face discussions with technical personnel and a visit to their works.

Visiting your supplier demonstrates to them that you are a unique customer rather than a generic one like a commodity trader who is mainly interested in availability and price. All top suppliers are interested in obtaining a better price for their products if they can supply to a higher tolerance or with specific quality attributes.

By visiting suppliers, NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS has been able to determine our ideal supplier for each specific requirement, by ascertaining:

Often visiting the works environment of a prospective supplier is the way to determine the likelihood of a company being able to consistently supply the product we require.

NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS believes that visiting your supplier is essential in establishing a long-term business relationship.

Molybdenum wire cutting machines offer many advantages over conventional brass wire cutting machines.

The molybdenum wire diameter commonly used is 0.18mm which meets most design requirements of narrow cuts and near sharp inside corner radii. The 0.18mm size has been found to give a perfect balance between lifetime, cutting speed, cutting tolerance and surface quality.

Because of its high tensile strength, molybdenum wire aids in maintaining excellent wall straightness whilst reducing the number of wire breakages common with copper or brass wires.

In special cases, typically in medical and military applications, there must be no copper or zinc contamination of the wire cut surface.  These criteria eliminate the use of copper-based wires and facilitate the use of molybdenum or tungsten wires.

In contrast to copper (Tensile strength 200-250MPa) or brass wires (Soft tensile strength +/-375MPa and Hard tensile strength +/-1180MPa), molybdenum wire has a very high tensile strength of +/-1725MPa. Molybdenum wire is therefore more resistant to very high pulling forces.

This gives several advantages:

Because molybdenum wire has a very high melting temperature (2625oC) compared to copper (1085oC) and brass (900-940oC) molybdenum wire CNC cutting machines are designed to handle very high working temperatures, with the result that almost all conductive materials - including the hardest and the toughest - can be cut successfully. Normal grade steels can be cut faster due to the use of higher spark power per second and per length of wire used compared to normal wires.

The spark craters left on the wire surface are very small compared to those left on the workpiece after cutting, resulting in much longer wire life than softer wires. On the other hand, the sparks produced on the workpiece are much bigger and give a better and faster cutting result. The metal removal rate can be very high with an electrical discharge machine (EDM) correctly designed to quickly flush away the burnt metal particles from the cut.

Typical molybdenum EDM parameters are given below:

  • Worktable size: 350mm x 600mm.
  • Cutting axis: 320mm (X) x 400mm (Y) x 400mm (Z).
  • Maximum weight of workpiece: 300kg.
  • Maximum machining speed: 170mm/min.
  • Wire diameter: 0.10 – 0.20mm.
  • Cutting tolerance: +/-0.015mm.
  • Surface finish: Ra <=1.2mm.
  • Power supply: 380V 3 phase.
  • Power consumption: 2.5KW.

NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS stock 0.18mm diameter molybdenum cutting wire on 2000m vacuum packed plastic spools.

Hot and cold cutting wires are made from a variety of metals and used for industrial cutting purposes.

HOT WIRE CUTTING is used to cut rigid foam materials such as expanded polystyrene (EPS) and expanded polyurethane (EPU).

A rigid cutting wire is connected across a variable low voltage supply causing it to be heated to a suitable temperature for cutting the desired material.

Too low a temperature or too low a feed speed will result in a ragged cut due to melted material re-hardening in the kerf. Too high a temperature will result in excessive wire stretch and reduced wire life.

A variety of metals from stainless steel to nickel chrome alloys (often with a copper coating to reduce sticking) are used, depending on the machine parameters of wire configuration and length of cut.

Similar heating wires are used for cutting and sealing polythene bags and wires with a composite profile are able to perform these operations simultaneously.

NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS supply hot cutting wire in several alloys, typically in the diameter range of 0.30mm – 0.60mm to Original Equipment Manufacturers and end-users.

COLD CUTTING WIRES are used for abrasive cutting either as a rigid wire knife or a rotating wire band saw.

Typical materials are high tensile carbon steel wires or high tensile alloy steel wires containing chrome or manganese. For cutting food items such as cheese, high tensile stainless steel wires are specified.

For high density materials and long or profile cuts, a strand of several wires may be necessary. Specialised strands may comprise a harder cutting wrap wire over a more resilient multi-wire core.

NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS supply both core and wrap wire materials for the manufacture of cutting bands.

In recent years, there has been a spotlight on the plight of our environment and on the importance of sustainable practices in all aspects of life. Johannesburg based lighting designer, Stephen Pikus, pushes the boundaries of sustainable practices in his sphere of influence by creating beautiful luminaires that are both environmentally friendly and socially beneficial in their manufacture. Pikus has two beautiful lighting ranges (with three more due for release in 2020), both of which are largely manufactured from waste products. He works closely with the city’s informal network of trolley-pushing recycling collectors, some established NGOs, and runs his own community upliftment initiative. Informal businesses are supported and unskilled workers are trained into competent craftsmen. They are also very involved in the YES (Youth Employment Services) by hosting 30 young interns, both male and female, for year long internships, where they receive hands-on work experience and learn numerous new skills.

The FIRE+ICE range is functional art created from recycled glass. Discarded glass is collected and processed until it resembles the opaque ‘tumbled’ look of sea glass, with no sharp edges. These glass elements are then individually wired into elegant light fittings and chandeliers. NOCKERS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS supplies the stainless-steel wire used to achieve the high-quality finish of the final product. There are a number of standard sizes available in three main shape categories; Linear Chandeliers (for an elegant addition to a bar or long table), pendant lights, or double volume pods (think glamorous stairwell centre-piece). Bespoke installations can also be created.

On one of his expeditions in search of discarded material, Pikus was inspired by a bin full of old truck filters. These elements are not usually recycled and just go to landfill. He created a light fitting that went on to win the 2014 Eskom Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition, and the TRuK range was born. Filters are electroplated or powder coated in a range of colours; Copper, Gold, Silver, White, or Matt Black, and then assembled as pendant lights or table lamps. There is a range of standard sizes as well as once-off sizes that can be assembled into custom designs. The exact process has been patented to ensure that it isn’t able to be mass produced overseas, the skills development and community impact remains in South Africa.
